GearGuide Entry:The Best in Plate Carrier Apparel: April 23, 2013
Take Your Best Shot
The Bullet-Proof Vest is one of many products with protection plates for impact. This tactical vest weighs under 9 pounds and has a full collar style design best suited for upper body protection. All of the bullet proof vests and products in the USA are rated for N.I.J. Threat Level 3a protection. This means that they will stop about 99% of available handgun ammunition including the powerful 44 magnum and 9 millimeter full metal jacket bullets.
Trauma plates, which are hard or soft plates you can put in your plate carrier apparel that may offer you some additional protection. Now in the past there's been a variety of
different types of trauma plates. Some of you all that have been around for a little while may own a K plate from Second Chance. I don't believe Second Chance makes this anymore. They were purchased a number of years ago. They're part of the whole Safari Land conglomerate now.
Expensive
plate carrier apparel
usually has steel on the inside. Then it's wrapped in Kevlar. These K plates will do a lot of good; as far as stopping some of the special threat rounds; like the Tokarev rounds and maybe your SIG rounds. Some things that maybe your less expensive vest isn't rated for handgun wise. These are also going to help reduce hit force at shorter distances. While all will assist, nothing necessarily will stop the rounds completely. Good plate apparel is still better to have, reducing the wounding capacity of some of your rifle rounds.
The ACU Strike plate carrier Harness, have heavy duty hook and loop flaps that hold up the ten by twelve inch ballistic plates. Some plate carrier comes covered with M.O.L.L.E webbing for modular pouch attachments. This is just a strong and comfortable harness to get into, highly recommended. The K-30 plates are still excellent, but if you want to go with something that is going to stop rifle rounds, the theta plate is your choice. It's very affordable but it is heavy. you can get this for less than $100. At that price, at this weight, there really is no excuse for you to not come out of pocket to get one of these. This could actually save your life if you do get shot. Even if your vest would have normally stopped the round, this is going to go a long way in speeding your recovery because the damage from the blunt force is much less.
